33B Pilate said to Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.”
37 So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

11/24/2024 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reflection: John 18:33B-37

This passage takes us to the intense moment when Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, facing questions about His identity and authority. Pilate’s inquiry about Jesus being a king reveals a profound truth that transcends human understanding: Jesus is indeed a King, but His kingdom is not of this world.

Unlike earthly kingdoms built on power, wealth, and conquest, Jesus’ kingdom is founded on truth, love, and righteousness. He does not rely on armies or political schemes to establish His reign. His authority flows from God and operates in the hearts of those who believe in Him. This kingdom is eternal, unshakable, and accessible to anyone who aligns with His truth.

As followers of Christ, we are invited to embrace this divine reality. Even in a world dominated by temporary power structures, we can find peace and security in knowing that we serve a King whose rule is everlasting. Jesus reminds us that while we live in this world, our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20).

Jesus declares that He came to testify to the truth. Truth, in this sense, is not merely factual accuracy but the ultimate reality of God’s love, justice, and salvation revealed through Jesus Himself. He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). His truth sets us free from the bondage of sin and opens the door to eternal life.

In a world filled with conflicting voices and shifting values, it is essential to root ourselves in the unchanging truth of Christ. By listening to His Word and following His example, we align ourselves with His kingdom and experience the abundant life He promises.

As citizens of Jesus’ kingdom, we are called to reflect His character in our daily lives. This means embodying love, humility, and service, even in challenging circumstances. Just as Jesus bore witness to the truth before Pilate, we are to bear witness to His truth in our communities.

This might require courage, especially when standing for Christ goes against popular opinion or personal comfort. Yet, we can take heart, knowing that we serve a King who has overcome the world (John 16:33).

Jesus’ words to Pilate remind us of a profound and eternal reality: we belong to a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us live as ambassadors of His truth, shining His light in a dark world. By doing so, we glorify our King and draw others into His unending grace and love.

May we boldly proclaim, like Jesus, that His kingdom is “not of this world” but of eternal significance.
