7/13/2024 (Saturday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 10:24-33

24 Jesus said to his Apostles: “No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master.
25 It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household!
26 “Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.
27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.
30 Even all the hairs of your head are counted.
31 So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32 Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.
33 But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

7/13/2024 (Saturday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 10:24-33

In this gospel reading, Jesus teaches us profound truths about discipleship, fear, and the incredible worth we hold in God’s eyes. These verses remind us of our calling and the assurances we have as followers of Christ.

Jesus begins by stating, “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master” (v. 24). This simple yet powerful truth sets the stage for understanding our relationship with Him. As His disciples, we are called to follow His example, to walk in His footsteps, and to learn from Him. This journey of discipleship is one of growth, transformation, and becoming more like Christ each day.

Jesus then addresses the reality of opposition: “If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household” (v. 25). Following Jesus is not without its challenges. We may face misunderstandings, ridicule, or even persecution. Yet, in these moments, we are not alone. Jesus, who faced the ultimate rejection, walks with us and strengthens us.

In verses 26-27, Jesus encourages us not to fear: “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.” Our faith calls us to boldness. The truth of God’s Kingdom is a light that must shine brightly in the world. We are entrusted with this message, and we must share it fearlessly, knowing that God’s truth will ultimately prevail.

Jesus continues, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (v. 28). Here, He shifts our focus from earthly fears to a reverent awe of God. Our greatest concern should be our relationship with God, who holds our eternal destiny. In this perspective, earthly threats lose their power over us.

Verses 29-31 provide a beautiful assurance of our value to God: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” God’s intimate knowledge of us and His care for even the smallest details of our lives affirm our worth. We are deeply loved and valued by our Creator.

Finally, Jesus calls us to acknowledge Him boldly: “So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven” (v. 32). Our public confession of faith is a testament to our allegiance to Christ. In doing so, we honor Him and affirm our identity as His followers.

This gospel passage emphasizes the call to discipleship, the courage to face opposition, and the profound value we hold in God’s eyes, encouraging believers to live boldly and fearlessly in their faith.

As believers, may we find courage in our calling, strength in our trials, and profound peace in knowing our immeasurable worth in God’s eyes. Let us walk boldly, proclaiming His truth, and living as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
