6/23/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.”
36 Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him.
37 A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up.
38 Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
39 He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm.
40 Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”
41 They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”

6/23/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 4:35-41

In the gospel passage above, we find ourselves on a journey with Jesus and His disciples. They set out to cross the Sea of Galilee, and as they sail, a violent storm arises. The waves crash against the boat, and the disciples are gripped by fear, convinced that they are perishing. Amidst this chaos, Jesus is found asleep on a cushion, a picture of perfect peace and trust. Awakened by the desperate cries of His disciples, He rises and rebukes the wind and the waves with a simple command: “Peace, be still!” Instantly, the storm ceases, and there is a great calm.

This passage is a powerful reminder of several profound truths that can inspire and uplift us in our own lives.

First, it shows us that even when we follow Jesus, we are not exempt from life’s storms. Challenges, trials, and uncertainties will come, just as they did for the disciples. However, Jesus’ presence in the boat with them is a testament that we are never alone. No matter how fierce the storm, He is with us, and His presence brings hope and assurance.

Second, Jesus’ ability to sleep through the storm illustrates an extraordinary peace that comes from complete trust in God. This peace is available to us as well. When we place our trust in God, we can find rest and calm even in the midst of turmoil. Jesus’ peace is not the absence of storms, but the presence of God’s assurance and sovereignty over every situation we face.

Moreover, Jesus’ rebuke of the storm demonstrates His divine authority and power. He speaks, and creation obeys. This same power is at work in our lives. When we face situations that seem overwhelming, we can call upon Jesus, knowing that He has the power to bring peace and stillness. Our circumstances are not beyond His control, and His word brings life and calm to our troubled hearts.

Finally, Jesus’ question to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” challenges us to examine our own faith. Fear and faith cannot coexist; one will always overpower the other. This passage calls us to cultivate a deep, abiding faith in Jesus, trusting that He is in control and that He cares for us deeply.

In the midst of life’s storms, let us remember that Jesus is in our boat. His presence brings peace, His power brings calm, and His love casts out fear. Let us anchor our faith in Him, trusting that He will guide us safely to the other side. May this message inspire us to find peace and faith in Jesus, no matter the storms we face.
