June 19 2024 Gospel Reading and Reflection

6/19/2024 (Wednesday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
2 When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
4 so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
5 “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6 But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
16 “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18 so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

6/19/2024 (Wednesday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

The gospel reading above teaches us about the importance of sincerity and humility in our acts of righteousness, prayer, and fasting. It reminds us to do good not for the recognition of others, but for the approval of our Heavenly Father. In a world that often celebrates outward appearances and public accolades, this passage calls us to cultivate an inner life of faith that seeks only to honor God.

In our daily lives, it’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking validation from those around us. We may feel pressured to showcase our good deeds, our piety, or our sacrifices, hoping for praise and admiration. Yet, Jesus teaches us to perform these acts in secret, where only God can see. When we give to the needy, we should not announce it with trumpets, but do so quietly and without fanfare. When we pray, we should go into our room, close the door, and pray to our Father who is unseen. When we fast, we should not look somber and disfigure our faces, but instead, carry on with our day in a way that doesn’t draw attention to our fasting.

This message encourages us to seek a deeper, more genuine relationship with God. It reminds us that the true reward comes not from human applause, but from the divine acknowledgment of a heart that seeks to please Him. By practicing our faith in humility and sincerity, we cultivate a spiritual integrity that is pleasing to God. We learn to find our worth not in the fleeting approval of people, but in the eternal affirmation of our Creator.

As we go about our lives, let us remember the words of Jesus. Let us strive to live with a pure heart, doing good quietly and sincerely. In doing so, we will discover the profound joy and peace that come from a life lived in genuine communion with God.
