6/8/2024 (Saturday) Today’s gospel reading: Luke 2:41-51

41 Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
42 and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom.
43 After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.
44 Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
45 but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions,
47 and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.
48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”
49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
50 But they did not understand what he said to them.
51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

6/8/2024 (Saturday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 2:41-51

In this gospel reading, we witness a remarkable moment in the life of Jesus, highlighting the profound wisdom and purpose that even a young heart can possess. This passage takes us to the time when Jesus, at the tender age of twelve, stayed behind in Jerusalem while His parents, Mary and Joseph, journeyed home from the annual Passover festival. After three days of anxious searching, they found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. All who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and answers.

This narrative reminds us of the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding, regardless of our age. Jesus’ desire to be in His Father’s house and engage in meaningful dialogue with learned scholars demonstrates a commitment to spiritual growth and a thirst for knowledge. It inspires us to nurture a curious and inquisitive spirit, to seek truth, and to be open to learning from those around us.

Moreover, this passage teaches us about the significance of our divine purpose. When Mary and Joseph expressed their concern, Jesus responded, “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” This profound statement reveals His awareness of His divine mission, even at such a young age. It encourages us to reflect on our own lives and consider the purpose for which we were created. Each of us has a unique calling, a path that we are meant to follow in service to God and others.

The journey of Mary and Joseph, filled with worry and then relief, also reminds us of the love and guidance of our parents and guardians. It is a call to honor and appreciate those who care for us and to understand that their concern often stems from a deep well of love.

In essence, the gospel passage beckons us to pursue wisdom, embrace our divine purpose, and cherish the love and guidance of those who support us on our journey. It is a call to live with intention, curiosity, and a deep sense of spiritual purpose, knowing that we are all part of a greater story written by our Heavenly Father.
