5/21/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 9:30-37

30 Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
31 He was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
32 But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.
33 They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”
34 But they remained silent. For they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.
35 Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
36 Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them,
37 “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”

5/21/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 9:30-37

In the gospel reading above, Jesus imparts profound wisdom about humility, service, and the true nature of greatness. As he journeys with his disciples, he speaks of his impending sacrifice, a mystery that leaves them puzzled and afraid to question further. But amidst this tension, Jesus offers a lesson that transcends time and speaks to our hearts today.

He asks his disciples, “What were you arguing about on the road?” Embarrassed, they fall silent, for they had been debating who among them was the greatest. Seizing this moment, Jesus sits down and calls the Twelve, saying, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

In a world often obsessed with status and power, Jesus flips the script, revealing that true greatness lies in humility and service. He illustrates this by taking a little child in his arms, saying, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

This powerful message reminds us that our worth is not measured by our achievements or the accolades we accumulate, but by our capacity to serve others selflessly. It calls us to embrace a childlike humility, to see the value in every person, and to extend love and compassion without expecting anything in return.

Let this passage inspire us to live a life of genuine service. May we embrace the opportunities to uplift others, recognizing that in doing so, we reflect the heart of Jesus. In a world where the race for greatness can often lead to division and discontent, choose the path of humility and love. For it is in serving others that we find true fulfillment and align ourselves with the divine purpose that Jesus exemplified.
