5/12/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 16:15-20
15 Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.
18 They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them.
They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.
20 But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.
5/12/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 16:15-20
The gospel reading above is the closing moments of the Gospel of Mark. Here we find Jesus giving a profound command to His disciples: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15). This timeless order not only marked the beginning of a global mission but also continues to resonate as a call to each of us today. It’s a reminder that our purpose transcends geographical, cultural, and social boundaries, urging us to bring light and hope wherever we go.
Jesus promises that those who believe and are baptized will be saved. This assurance is not just about the hereafter; it’s about the transformation that starts now—within us and around us. Our faith is not passive; it’s active and engaging, empowered by the signs that follow believers. Just as the disciples were able to heal, speak new languages, and overcome serpents, we too are equipped with gifts that can defy expectations and surmount obstacles. These signs are both spiritual and practical, helping us to navigate the challenges of our times and to impact others positively.
Moreover, Jesus’ ascension into heaven is a powerful symbol of His eternal lordship and the promise that He is with us always, even to the end of the age. As we step out in faith, we are not alone. The presence of Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, guides, comforts, and strengthens us.
Therefore, let us take this message to heart. Let us be bearers of good news, not just with our words but through our actions and our lives. Each day presents a fresh opportunity to manifest the goodness of God, to touch lives, and to make a tangible difference. Embrace this mission with courage and joy, for in doing so, we truly fulfill our calling and live out the love of Christ in a world that yearns for hope.
