1/25/2024 (Thursday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 16:15-18

15 Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.
18 They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

1/25/2024 (Thursday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 16:15-18

In this gospel narrative, Jesus imparts a powerful and inspiring directive to His followers, encapsulating the essence of our Christian mission and the extraordinary empowerment we receive through faith in Him. This passage, often referred to as the Great Commission, emphasizes not only the responsibility but also the divine empowerment given to believers.

The command “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” is a call to action, underlining our duty to spread the message of Christ’s love and salvation. This isn’t a task limited to a select few; it’s a universal commission for all who follow Jesus, signifying that each of us has a role to play in God’s redemptive plan.

The subsequent verses describe signs that will accompany those who believe: casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, protection against deadly poison, and healing the sick through laying on of hands. These signs are not just miraculous acts for the early church but symbolize the spiritual empowerment available to all believers. They remind us that through faith in Jesus, we are endowed with the Holy Spirit’s power, enabling us to overcome obstacles, speak God’s truth, and bring healing and hope to a hurting world.

This message is incredibly empowering. It assures us that in our mission, we are not alone nor powerless. Jesus empowers us, equips us, and walks with us. This empowerment calls for boldness, faith, and action. It’s an invitation to step out in faith, trusting in the abilities God has given us, and to impact the world positively for His glory. This passage reaffirms that through Jesus, we are more than just messengers; we are empowered agents of His transformative love.
