July 4 2023 Gospel Reading and Reflection

7/4/2023 (Tuesday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 8:23-27

23 As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
24 Suddenly a violent storm came upon the sea so that the boat was being swamped by waves, but he was asleep.
25 They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.
27 The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

7/4/2023 (Tuesday) Today’s gospel reflection: Matthew 8:23-27

The gospel reading above reminds us that Jesus is God who is in control of everything including the seas and the sky. He was with God the Father at the beginning of creation. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. It means no creature is above Him and with Him and in Him, nothing is impossible. That is why “even the winds and the sea obey” Him.

Truly, the winds and the sea obey Jesus. He tells them to be calm and they obey. What about us? Like the Apostles, we tremble in fear every time “storms” pass us by. So Jesus is asking us too, “Where is your faith?”.

So let us have faith in Jesus and to be calm even in the midst of the strongest storms. Let us be calm even if the people around us are annoying. Let us be calm even when month end comes and bills pile up and we scramble for money to pay them. Let us be calm even if great physical or man-made calamities happen in our life. It is the best and most practical behavior that we can actually possess. We can solve problems much easier when we are calm rather than in the state of fear or anger. This is because we have presence of mind when we are calm and we are able to decide the best solution to the problem. And the best solution is to pray first and ask help from above.
