8/14/2022 Today’s (Sunday) Gospel Reading: Luke 12:49-53

Jesus said to his disciples:
49 “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!
50 There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
51 Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
52 From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;
53 a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

8/14/2022 Today’s (Sunday) Gospel Reflection: Luke 12:49-53

Jesus wants to put the earth on fire and He wishes to do it immediately. He has come with a mission to unite the people with His Father yet many people rejected Him and until now, they are still rejecting Him. This is His anguish: He wants to purify the earth just like a metal being purified in a hot furnace but those who reject Him, and there are millions of them, will be burned. It is understandable that His heart is torn to pieces out of compassion for all the people who continue to sin by rejecting the Truth of the gospel.

The call for unity under the Truth of Jesus Christ rings hollow to people who continue to reject Him. Still, the Truth of the gospel continues to be proclaimed everywhere on earth. And so, the division that Jesus speaks about is true today as it was during His time. More so when people cling to relativism. They insist that truth is relative; that your truth is as good as theirs though the difference is far as the earth is from the sun!

There is actually one Truth – the truth of God’s Love – and it will remain as the only truth, no matter how many people reject it. Only God’s love as expressed in the incarnation can heal division. Let us continue to pray that more and more people will understand the Truth of God’s love and live it.
