7/19/2022 Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 12:46-50

46 While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him.
47 Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you.”
48 But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50 For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

7/19/2022 Today’s Gospel Reflection: Matthew 12:46-50

We have heard the saying, “Blood is thicker than water.” This means that family relationship is more important than any other relationships. In Asia, the strong bond of family members extends to members of a clan that include distant cousins and other relatives. The obvious advantage is support given to one another which can even be used to cover up wrongdoings of one member.

For Jesus, the most important thing in one’s life is submission to the will of God. Blood ties should never be an excuse not to follow God’s will. Support of family members should be used for the glory of God and therefore, it should never be used as a vehicle to commit sin or to advance family interests at the expense of the public.

The gospel reading above invites us to a higher relationship than our earthly family. Jesus is reminding us that we belong to the family of God. While the law teaches us to honor our father and mother on earth, He is telling us to honor first and foremost our Father in heaven by doing His will.
