A reading from the gospel according to John 17:20-26:
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:
20 “I pray not only for these but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.
22 And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one,
23 I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me.
24 Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
25 Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me.
26 I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”
Reflection: Glory to God
We were created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). It is for His own GLORY that He created us and it is for His own GLORY that we know Him. As we thank Him for the gift of life, we ask ourselves if we truly know Him, the giver of life, the source of our breath and our ultimate destiny.
It was the mission of Jesus to let the world know about His Father and that He may be glorified. He built a small community of disciples for this particular mission. In the gospel reading above, He prayed for the unity of this small community to whom He revealed His Father. In His prayer, He was thankful to the Father as He considered His disciples as GIFT.
It is through that small community that millions and millions have come to know God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is no longer a small community. Yet millions more still do not know the Blessed Trinity. How will they ever know?
You and I are now part of this community. Just as the Apostles were called and sent to make the Father be known to the world, so we called to do the same. It is for the GLORY of God that we make Him known to others. And just as Jesus considered His apostles as GIFT, let us consider the people around us as GIFT too. It is to them that we are sent.
