Oprah was born into abject poverty in a rural town. As a child, she learned how to read and write before the age of three which merited a promotion to the next level in kindergarten. Like her own mother, she became a teen-age mother at the age of 14. Her baby died after only two weeks. While in high school in Tennessee, she was given the opportunity to anchor a radio program which she did with gusto and was an outright success. She went on to co-anchor an evening newscast and later, a day-time program.

In the early 1970s, Oprah made her debut in television talk shows in Nashville and in Baltimore. In 1983, she moved to Chicago where she became the anchor of a morning talk show. She became a sensation and after a month, her show rose to become number 1 in the city. Three years later, she created ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’, a syndicated show which was broadcast nationally. Since then, it was the most popular talk show in America for the past 25 years.

Oprah entered the film industry as an actress in the 1985 movie The Colored Purple. She went on to appear in several movies, some of which she produced herself. In 2000, Oprah launched her own magazine O:The Oprah magazine.

In 2011, Oprah launched OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), television channel owned by Harpo Studios and Discovery Communications. Harpo is actually Oprah spelled backward. The channel is now available in more than 80 million households around the world.

  1. I always liked Miss Winfrey. I watched her 25th anniversary show on TV. I feel like she’s a success as herself. We can’t plan life, life unfolds and life happens!
