Strolling at King Rama IX Park in Bangkok

Do you want to get away from the city crowd? Go rest or stroll at King Rama IX Park. With an area of around 200 acres (81 hectares), it is the biggest public park in Bangkok, Thailand. Called The King’s Park for short, it was inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol.

King’s Park features a lake and a building with a tall golden spire that is visible thoroughout the park. You can hire a swan boat and explore the areas around. Many lizards, big and small, live in the lake and from time to time you can witness one swimming or crawling along the shore.

The park has many sections. Some countries are represented such as China, United Kingdom, France, and the United States.

The best time to visit the park is late November up to early February, the cooler months of Thailand. During this time, the park is all ablooming with rows and rows of flowers of different hues.

But the biggest pavillion, a showcase of Thai architecture, is built at the southern part of the park with a large open field. On special occasions, this field is used for playing football or exhibition.

You can visit King’s Park with your car or you can commute via public transport from Udomsuk BTS Skytrain Station. It is opened from 5:00 am to 6:00 pm. If you arrive early, you can join some people doing aerobics or Tai Chi. There are no tall buildings around so you can have a nice view of the sunrise during a clear day. Food is not much of a problem because opposite the main gate are restaurants, coffee shops, and a supermarket.

  1. Lovely place, thanks for sharing so many pictures and angles of it. I am actually updating my Bangkok Architecture guide and wanted to ask you what places are new in the city?

    • Hi Virginia, Thanks for dropping by. For the past five months or so, I did not make any new research nor read any new article of Bangkok So I can’t answer your question. The newest tourist attraction I know is Icon Siam but I haven’t visited this one yet.
