10/31/2026 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel Reading: Luke 14:1, 7-14
1 On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.
7 He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.
8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
9 and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
10 Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
11 For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
12 Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.
13 Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
14 Blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
10/31/2026 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel Reflection / Homily / Sermon: Luke 14:1, 7-14
Theme: The TABLE: A Place of Humility, Love, and Generosity
Jesus attends a meal at the house of a prominent Pharisee, where He observes the guests choosing places of honor. He teaches them the importance of humility, reminding them not to seek the highest position but to allow others to recognize their worth. He also challenges His host to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind instead of seeking invitations from those who can repay him. Through these teachings, Jesus reveals that true greatness is found in humility, and true generosity is expressed in love without expecting anything in return.
The Gospel invites us to reflect on the meaning of the TABLE, not merely as a place where people gather to eat, but as a symbol of our relationships, our values, and our Christian calling.
Let us use the word TABLE to remember five important lessons.
T — Take the Lower Place
Jesus teaches us that humility is more beautiful than the desire for recognition. In a world where people compete for titles, positions, and applause, He invites us to take the lower place.
Humility does not mean thinking less of ourselves. It means recognizing that our worth comes from God, not from our status or achievements. We do not need to prove that we are important by making others feel insignificant.
A humble person knows that every position is an opportunity to serve, not a privilege to dominate.
A — Appreciate Every Person
At the table of Jesus, no one is insignificant. The poor, the weak, the forgotten, and the influential are all precious in God’s eyes.
Sometimes, we judge people according to their appearance, education, wealth, or social standing. We may welcome those who can benefit us while overlooking those who have nothing to offer.
Jesus challenges us to look beyond outward appearances and recognize the dignity of every human being.
Let us remember that the person we consider unimportant may be someone deeply loved by God.
B — Be Generous Without Expecting Returns
Jesus encourages us to give without calculating what we might receive in exchange.
True generosity is not a business transaction. It is an expression of love. We do not help others merely because they can help us someday. We help because compassion moves our hearts.
A kind word, a helping hand, a shared meal, or a sincere prayer can become a blessing to someone who is struggling.
The greatest generosity is not measured by how much we give, but by how much love we put into giving.
L — Let God Be Your Reward
The world often rewards people with recognition, applause, and material benefits. But Jesus reminds us that the greatest reward comes from God.
When we serve others quietly, forgive sincerely, and share generously, we may not receive immediate recognition. Yet every act of genuine love has eternal value.
Let us not become discouraged when our goodness goes unnoticed. God sees the sacrifices that others do not see. He knows the intentions of our hearts.
Our mission is not to impress people but to please God.
E — Extend Your Table to Others
A Christian life should never become a closed table reserved only for family, friends, and people who share our interests.
Jesus calls us to widen our circle of love. We are invited to welcome the lonely, encourage the discouraged, and reach out to those who feel forgotten.
Our homes, communities, and churches should become places where people experience acceptance, compassion, and hope.
The TABLE of Jesus is not a place where we compete for the highest seat, but where we make room for others.
May we always choose humility over pride, appreciation over judgment, generosity over selfishness, and service over recognition.
And may our lives become a table of blessings where everyone is welcomed, everyone is valued, and everyone encounters the love of God.
