6/28/2026 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 10:37-42
37 Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38 and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.
39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
41 Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.
42 And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple, amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”
6/28/2026 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 10:37-42
This Gospel passage challenges us to examine our priorities and reminds us that following Christ requires wholehearted commitment. True discipleship is not always easy, but it leads to a life filled with purpose, joy, and eternal significance. The word REWARD can help us remember the lessons of this Gospel.
R – Relationship with Christ First
The Gospel teaches that our relationship with Christ must be our highest priority. Family, friends, work, and possessions are important gifts, but none should take the place of God in our hearts. When we place Christ first, every other relationship finds its proper place. A life centered on Him becomes a life guided by wisdom and love.
E – Embrace the Cross
Following Jesus means accepting sacrifices and challenges. Every day brings opportunities to choose faithfulness over comfort, truth over popularity, and service over selfishness. The cross we carry may be hidden from others, but God sees every act of perseverance. Difficulties become meaningful when they are embraced with trust and love.
W – Welcome God’s Messengers
The Gospel highlights the importance of receiving and supporting those who serve God. Whether they are pastors, missionaries, teachers, volunteers, or faithful believers, welcoming them is a way of welcoming Christ Himself. Encouraging others in their ministry allows us to share in the blessings of their work.
A – Acts of Kindness Matter
Even the smallest act of generosity has value in God’s eyes. A kind word, a helping hand, a listening ear, or a simple gesture of compassion can make a lasting difference in someone’s life. God measures not the size of the gift but the love with which it is given. No sincere act of kindness is ever wasted.
R – Remember Your True Purpose
Many people spend their lives chasing success, recognition, or possessions, only to discover that these things cannot fully satisfy the heart. The Gospel reminds us that our true purpose is to know, love, and serve God while helping others along the way. When we live for something greater than ourselves, life gains deeper meaning.
D – Devoted Faithfulness
God never overlooks faithfulness. Every sacrifice, every act of love, every moment of service, and every choice to follow Christ is precious in His sight. Even when our efforts seem unnoticed by others, God sees them all. A devoted heart continues to serve, give, and love without seeking recognition. Faithfulness in small things has great value in God’s kingdom. When we remain steadfast in following Christ, we experience the joy, peace, and fulfillment that come from walking closely with Him. A life devoted to God is never lived in vain, for He honors every sincere act done out of love.
The message of the Gospel reading reminds us to place Christ first, embrace sacrifice, welcome His servants, practice kindness, remember our purpose, and trust in God’s promises. When we live this way, we discover that the greatest reward is not what we receive from God, but the privilege of walking closely with Him every day.
