John Ivan Cruz is the eldest in a large family of seven siblings. His father is a pedicab driver and his mother is a street vendor. He is a cousin of the renowned double Olympic champion, Carlos Yulo.
Career
John Ivan Cruz is a two-time SEA Games gold medalist. His first major international gold medal was clinched in the men’s floor exercise at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. His second gold was recently won at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand in the men’s vault event, where he shared the gold medal with a Malaysian competitor following a successful team protest and score recomputation. Despite failing to defend his floor exercise title due to an inability to qualify for the final, he was determined not to waste the opportunity in the vault, pushing through a stubborn right ankle injury he sustained a week prior to the competition. He views his successes as blessings from God and he has stated that he received valuable pointers from Carlos Yulo, who advised him to focus on his performance rather than the medal itself.
