Family and Early Life
Born on May 23, 2005, in Quezon City, Philippines, Alex Eala comes from a family with a strong athletic background. Her mother, Rosemarie “Rizza” Maniego-Eala, was a bronze medalist in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games. Her older brother, Michael “Miko” Eala, also played tennis for Pennsylvania State University. She is also the niece of former Philippine Sports Commission chairperson, Noli Eala. She began playing tennis at the age of four.
Education
Eala attended the Immaculate Conception Academy in San Juan and Colegio San Agustin in Makati before receiving a scholarship to train at the prestigious Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Mallorca, Spain, at the age of 12. She graduated from the academy in 2023.
Junior Career Highlights
Eala’s junior career was marked by a series of historic milestones.
2020: She won her first junior Grand Slam title in doubles at the Australian Open, partnered with Priska Madelyn Nugroho.
2021: She followed up with her second junior Grand Slam doubles title at the French Open.

Miami Open: As a wildcard, she reached the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event, a historic first for a Filipino. Along the way, she defeated three Grand Slam champions, including a major upset over Iga Świątek, becoming the first Filipina to beat a top-5 and top-10 player.
Eastbourne Open: She became the first Filipino to reach a WTA Tour-level singles final.
Wimbledon: She made her main draw debut, earning a memorable Centre Court appearance.
US Open: She secured her first-ever main draw match victory at a major, a historic first for a Filipino in the Open Era.
Guadalajara Open: She won her first WTA title, a WTA 125 event, making her the first Filipino to ever win a WTA tournament.
