8/15/2025 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 1:39-56

39 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,
40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”
46 And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
47 my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
48 for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed:
49 the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name.
50 He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.
51 He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
52 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
55 the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.”
56 Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

8/15/2025 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 1:39-56

Mary had just received extraordinary news, the kind that would shake any person to their core. Young, humble, and unmarried, she was told that she would carry a child, not just any child, but one destined to change the world. And what does she do next? She doesn’t isolate or retreat in fear. Instead, she hurries to see someone who might understand and that is Elizabeth, her older cousin, also miraculously expecting a child in her old age.

This meeting between the two women is a beautiful reminder of the power of community and connection in times of great change. Mary sought out someone who could walk with her through the unknown, and Elizabeth, filled with joy, welcomed her with open arms and a heart full of faith. Sometimes the greatest support we can give or receive is simply to be present, to affirm one another’s journey, and to celebrate what God is doing even if we don’t fully understand it yet.

When Elizabeth sees Mary, something extraordinary happens. Her child leaps within her, and she recognizes the sacredness of Mary’s calling. She blesses her, not out of envy or comparison, but out of genuine joy. In a world that often pits people against each other in silent competition, this moment stands out. It shows us the beauty of cheering for someone else’s blessing even as we await our own.

And then Mary responds, not with fear or doubt but with a song. Her words are a celebration of who God is and what He has done in her life. She doesn’t sing from a throne; she sings from a place of humility, acknowledging her smallness yet rejoicing in the greatness of her calling. Her praise is not only personal; it is also prophetic. She sees that what’s happening in her life is part of a much bigger story, one that reaches back through generations and forward into the future.

Mary’s song reminds us that no matter how small or overlooked we may feel, we are never insignificant in God’s plan. He sees the humble, lifts up the lowly, and brings hope into places of despair. Her voice rises on behalf of all who have waited in silence, longed for justice, and hoped for redemption. Through her, we see that God doesn’t always choose the obvious but the willing. He works through ordinary lives to accomplish extraordinary things.

Each of us, in our own way, carries something within like dreams, callings, hopes, and even burdens. And like Mary and Elizabeth, we are invited to share the journey with others, to rejoice in one another’s joys, and to trust in a greater purpose unfolding even when the path is unclear.

You may not be able to see the full picture of what God is doing in your life right now. But your story matters. Your quiet “yes” matters. Your willingness to believe, even when the road ahead is uncertain, has the power to change more than just your own life and it may very well echo for generations to come.

So don’t be afraid to carry the light within you. Don’t be afraid to sing your song. And don’t underestimate the power of a joyful heart, a faithful step, or a moment shared with someone who believes in you. In a world filled with noise and fear, let your life be a testimony of trust, joy, and the miracle of saying yes to God’s invitation.
