8/5/2025 (Tuesady) Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:22-36

22 Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side of the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.
24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
27 At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
28 Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
29 He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
34 After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick
36 and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.

8/5/2025 (Tuesady) Today’s Gospel Reflection / Homily / Sermon: Matthew 14:22-36

After the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, Jesus sent His disciples ahead by boat while He went up a mountain to pray alone. As evening came, the disciples found themselves in the middle of a turbulent sea, struggling against strong winds. In the darkest part of the night, something extraordinary happened. Jesus walked toward them on the water. Terrified, the disciples thought they were seeing a ghost but they soon realized it was Jesus, their Teacher. One of them, Peter, full of courage and doubt at the same time, stepped out onto the water to meet Him. But fear got the better of him, and he began to sink. Still, the story didn’t end in failure. It ended with rescue, assurance, and awe.

This story is more than just a supernatural event; it’s a picture of what happens when faith meets fear, and when human weakness is met with divine strength. The storm represents the challenges of life, those moments when we feel tossed around by things we can’t control such as sickness, financial hardship, broken relationships, and personal doubt. Like the disciples, we may feel far from safety, rowing hard but going nowhere. And like the disciple who stepped out of the boat, we may want to walk in faith but falter when the winds pick up. The good news is that even when we begin to sink, we are not alone. There is a hand ready to lift us up.

In real life, it’s easy to focus on the waves, on the problems, uncertainties, and fears that surround us. But this passage teaches us where our focus should be. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus – the one who calms the storm, we find the strength to keep walking. It doesn’t mean we’ll never feel fear but it means fear doesn’t get the final say. Faith is not the absence of fear; it’s the courage to move forward despite it. And even when our faith feels small or shaky, what matters most is the one in whom we place it. He is constant even when we are not.

Let this passage be a reminder that storms are not signs of abandonment. They are often places of revelation. The disciples came to know their Teacher more deeply not when everything was calm, but in the chaos. It was in the middle of the storm that they witnessed His power and felt His nearness. In the same way, the most defining moments of our faith often arise not from peaceful days, but from stormy nights. We learn not just who God is, but who we are when we choose to trust Him in the middle of uncertainty.

So if you find yourself facing wind and waves today, don’t be discouraged. Keep rowing, keep believing, and when called to, step out of the boat. Even if you stumble, know that there is grace to catch you and strength to help you rise. Let this be a season where your trust deepens, your vision sharpens, and your faith grows stronger. The storm may not stop immediately, but the One who walks on water walks toward you. He sees you, He knows you, and He will never let you go. Let your life be a testimony, not just of calm seas, but of courage in the storm.
