7/21/2025 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 12:38-42

38 Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
39 He said to them in reply, “An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign,
but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
40 Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
41 At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here.
42 At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

7/21/2025 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reflection / reflection / sermon: Matthew 12:38-42

Many times, we long for a sign, something dramatic, unmistakable, a signal from heaven to confirm our path, our faith, or our decisions. We say, “If only I could see a miracle, I’d believe more,” or “If God really wants me to do this, He should show me clearly.” But often, the answer isn’t in the spectacular. It’s already in front of us in the scripture, in history, in wisdom, and in the quiet whispers of the heart.

Consider this: imagine someone walking into a library filled with the biographies of heroes who endured hardship, overcame odds, and lived with integrity. Yet, instead of reading, they ask, “Can someone show me one real example of courage?” The irony is clear. People are surrounded by proof but unwilling to recognize it.

In life, many of us do the same. We overlook the signs already given, the wisdom of those who came before, the quiet prompting of our conscience, or the transformative teachings we’ve already heard. There are stories all around us of people who chose integrity when no one was watching, who forgave when they had every right not to, who served when they had nothing to gain. These are modern-day miracles of character and courage.

Think of a single mother working two jobs but still finding time to encourage her children and nurture their dreams. Think of a teacher in an underfunded school who invests in every student like they were their own. Or a recovering addict who now mentors others, turning their pain into someone else’s hope. These lives don’t come with thunder and lightning, but they speak volumes about the power of grace, choice, and transformation.

True faith doesn’t always need fireworks. It requires attention, humility, and a willingness to respond. Greatness often shows up in ordinary clothes. Wisdom doesn’t always shout. It often whispers through the ordinary events of the day. If we’re always looking for something “bigger,” we might miss the power already present.

So, instead of asking for more signs, ask for more clarity in seeing what’s already there. Live in a way that doesn’t just seek the spectacular but honors the truth already revealed. The call is not to wait for a miracle but to be the response, to rise with the wisdom you’ve received, and to live it out boldly, here and now.
