March 12 2025 Gospel reading and Reflection

3/12/2025 (Wednesday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 11:29-32

29 While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.
30 Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
31 At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.
32 At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

3/12/2025 (Wednesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 11:29-32

Jesus speaks to a generation seeking a sign, telling them that none will be given except the sign of Jonah. He warns that the people of Nineveh, who repented at Jonah’s preaching, will rise in judgment against those who refuse to believe. Likewise, the Queen of the South, who traveled far to seek Solomon’s wisdom, will condemn those who fail to recognize the wisdom of Christ, who is far greater than Solomon.

This passage serves as a powerful reminder that faith is not about demanding signs and miracles—it is about responding to God’s call with a repentant and open heart. The people in Jesus’ time had seen His works and heard His teachings, yet many still doubted. They wanted proof, not realizing that Jesus Himself was the greatest sign from God.

Faith Beyond Signs
Many of us, like the people in Jesus’ time, long for tangible proof of God’s presence. We may think, “If only God would perform a miracle in my life, then I would truly believe.” But Jesus teaches us that true faith does not come from seeing miracles—it comes from recognizing God’s truth and responding in obedience.

Jonah preached in Nineveh, and the people repented without seeing great wonders. The Queen of Sheba journeyed far just to seek wisdom. In contrast, Jesus, the very Son of God, stood before His generation, yet many refused to listen. How much more should we believe today, having the full revelation of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection?

The Urgency of Repentance
The Ninevites had only Jonah, a reluctant prophet, preaching a message of judgment. Yet they humbled themselves, fasted, and turned from their wicked ways. Because of their repentance, God showed them mercy.

Jesus, however, was far greater than Jonah. His message was one of grace, love, and redemption. If the Ninevites repented at Jonah’s preaching, how much more should we respond to Christ, who gave His life for us?

This passage is a call to examine our hearts. Are we truly listening to God’s voice, or are we waiting for a sign before we surrender to Him? The time for repentance is now. God’s mercy is available, but we must not take it for granted.

Seeking Jesus Above All
The Queen of Sheba went to great lengths to seek Solomon’s wisdom, yet Jesus is greater than Solomon! His wisdom leads to eternal life. Do we seek Jesus with the same passion? Do we hunger for His Word, spend time in prayer, and desire to grow in faith?

Jesus invites us to believe, not because of spectacular signs, but because He has already shown us the greatest sign—His death and resurrection. He is the fulfillment of all God’s promises.

Let us not wait for another sign. The sign has already been given — Christ Himself. May we respond with repentance, faith, and a deep desire to seek Him above all else.
