3/1/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Mark 10:13-16

13 People were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.
14 When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
15 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”
16 Then he embraced the children and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

3/1/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 10:13-16

In this short yet powerful Gospel passage, Jesus reveals something profound about the nature of God’s kingdom. The disciples, acting out of a cultural mindset that viewed children as insignificant, tried to stop them from coming to Jesus. But Jesus was indignant, that means deeply upset, because they were blocking what He truly desired: an open and unhindered relationship between God and His people, modeled through the simplicity of a child’s heart.

What Does It Mean to Have a Childlike Faith?
Jesus said that the kingdom of God belongs to those who receive it like a child. But what does that mean? Does it mean being immature or naive? No, rather, it calls us to embrace qualities that define a child’s relationship with a loving parent:

1. Trusting and Dependent
Children do not doubt their parents’ love and provision. They rely on them completely for food, shelter, and security. Likewise, God calls us to trust Him without hesitation. When life feels uncertain, He wants us to lean on Him fully, knowing that He will provide for our needs (Philippians 4:19).

2. Humble and Teachable
A child does not claim to know everything; they are eager to learn. They ask questions, seek guidance, and follow instructions. In contrast, adults often rely too much on their own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord rather than our own wisdom. God’s kingdom is not for the proud, but for the humble who are willing to learn and grow under His guidance.

3. Full of Wonder and Joy
Have you ever seen the way children marvel at the smallest things—a butterfly, a rainbow, or a kind word? Their hearts are open to joy. Jesus wants us to rediscover that same sense of awe in His presence. Psalm 16:11 tells us that in God’s presence, there is fullness of joy. When we approach Him like children, we find true delight in His love.

4. Quick to Forgive
Children may get upset, but they are also quick to forgive and move forward. Unlike adults, who may hold grudges, children reconcile easily. Jesus calls us to have hearts that let go of bitterness and embrace the peace of His kingdom (Colossians 3:13).

What Hinders Us From Having Childlike Faith?
Just as the disciples unintentionally blocked the children from coming to Jesus, we, too, can allow barriers to form in our relationship with God. What are some things that might hinder us from receiving His kingdom with childlike faith?

1. Doubt and Fear – Instead of trusting God, we sometimes let worries control our hearts. But Jesus reminds us that perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18).

2. Pride and Self-Sufficiency – When we think we can handle life on our own, we forget our need for God’s help. He calls us to humble ourselves before Him (James 4:10).

3. Past Hurts – Pain and disappointments can make us hesitant to trust again. But Jesus is the healer of broken hearts (Psalm 147:3).

4. Busyness and Distractions – We often fill our lives with responsibilities, leaving little time for God. Yet He calls us to be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10).

Jesus’ Blessing Awaits
The most beautiful part of this passage is the way Jesus welcomed the children. He did not merely allow them to come—He took them in His arms, placed His hands on them, and blessed them. This is the heart of our Savior. He desires to embrace us, to bless us, and to remind us that we are deeply loved.

Today, Jesus is inviting us to come to Him with childlike faith. No matter where we are in life, He calls us to trust, to rejoice, and to receive His kingdom with open hearts. Will you accept His invitation?

Let us pray:
Lord, help us to have childlike faith. Remove any barriers that keep us from trusting You completely. Teach us to depend on You, to find joy in Your presence, and to rest in Your loving embrace. May we always come to You with open hearts, ready to receive Your blessings. Amen.
