2/1/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Mark 4:35-41
35 On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.”
36 Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him.
37 A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up.
38 Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
39 He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm.
40 Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”
41 They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”
2/1/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 4:35-41
Life can often feel like sailing across a calm sea one moment, only to be overtaken by a ferocious storm the next. In the Gospel story above, we see this vivid imagery unfold as Jesus and His disciples embark on a journey across the Sea of Galilee. What begins as a peaceful evening turns into a terrifying encounter with nature’s fury. Waves crash against their boat, threatening to sink it, while the disciples, gripped by fear, struggle to hold on. In the midst of their panic, Jesus does something unexpected—He sleeps.
The disciples wake Him with an urgent plea: “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Their question reflects the cries of many hearts when life becomes overwhelming. Where is God when the storm rages? Does He care about our struggles? These are the questions we wrestle with when circumstances feel beyond our control.
Jesus’ response is powerful and transformative. He gets up, rebukes the wind, and says to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Instantly, the storm ceases, and there is a great calm. But then He turns to His disciples and asks, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
This passage offers profound lessons about faith, fear, and the presence of God in our lives.
1. Storms Are Part of Life
The disciples were following Jesus, obeying His command to cross to the other side of the lake. Yet even in obedience, they encountered a storm. This reminds us that being in God’s will does not exempt us from challenges. Storms are inevitable in life—financial struggles, health crises, broken relationships, or unexpected loss. But these storms are not an indication that God has abandoned us. Rather, they are opportunities for us to experience His power and presence in new ways.
2. Jesus Is Always Present
It’s striking that while the storm raged, Jesus was in the boat. He didn’t prevent the storm, but He was right there with His disciples. His presence didn’t mean the absence of trouble, but it did mean the guarantee of His peace and power.
When we face life’s storms, it can feel as though God is distant or silent. But the truth is, He is always with us. Just as Jesus was in the boat, He is in the midst of our chaos. His presence is our anchor, giving us the strength to endure and the assurance that we are not alone.
3. Faith Over Fear
The disciples’ fear came from focusing on the storm rather than on Jesus. Fear often arises when we fix our eyes on our circumstances instead of on God’s promises. Jesus’ question—“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”—invites us to shift our perspective.
Faith doesn’t mean ignoring the reality of the storm; it means trusting that the One who created the wind and the waves is in control. It’s believing that His power is greater than any force that comes against us. When fear threatens to overwhelm us, we can choose faith, declaring that God is bigger than our problems and that His love will see us through.
4. Trusting the God Who Calms the Storm
Jesus’ ability to command the wind and waves reveals His divine authority. The same God who calmed the sea is the God who holds our lives in His hands. No storm is too great for Him. When we place our trust in Him, we find peace—even when the storm hasn’t yet subsided.
Living Out This Truth
The Gospel narrative reminds us that storms will come, but we are never alone. The God who calms the sea is the same God who speaks peace into our hearts. When fear creeps in, let us remember His faithfulness and choose to trust Him.
If you’re facing a storm today, hear Jesus’ words to the wind and waves as His words to you: “Quiet! Be still!” Let His peace fill your heart. Trust that He is in control, and know that even when life feels chaotic, He is with you.
Storms don’t last forever, but God’s love and faithfulness endure. Keep your eyes on Him, and you’ll discover the calm that comes from trusting the One who is greater than any storm.
