1/25/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Mark 16:15-18

15 Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.
18 They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

1/25/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 16:15-18

The Gospel reading above records some of Jesus’ final words to His disciples before ascending to heaven. This passage, often referred to as the Great Commission, carries an invitation and a challenge. The words are not merely instructions; they are a calling for all believers to live out their faith boldly, trusting in the power and promises of God.

1. The Call to Proclaim the Gospel
The command to “go into all the world” reminds us that the gospel is not confined to specific places or people. Jesus calls us to step beyond our comfort zones and carry His message of love, grace, and salvation to everyone including friends, family, strangers, and even those who seem far from God.

This mission isn’t reserved for pastors or missionaries. It’s for every believer. You don’t need a pulpit to share the gospel; you can be a witness in your workplace, neighborhood, or school. Sometimes, your actions like kindness, patience, and integrity, speak louder than words. Other times, a simple testimony of what Jesus has done in your life can touch hearts in ways you may not imagine.

2. Faith Brings Salvation
The promise of salvation for those who believe and are baptized is a cornerstone of our faith. It’s a reminder that the message we carry has eternal significance. Salvation is not about human effort; it’s a gift from God, received through faith.

However, this passage also mentions condemnation for those who do not believe. While this can be sobering, it is not a reason for despair but a motivation to share the gospel with urgency and compassion. Our role is not to judge but to lovingly invite others into a relationship with Christ.

3. The Signs of Believers
Jesus promised that miraculous signs would accompany those who believe. These signs are not meant to glorify us but to confirm God’s power and presence. When believers drive out demons, heal the sick, or overcome dangers, it reveals God’s authority over evil and His care for His people.

While we may not all experience these signs in dramatic ways, they remind us that God equips us for His work. Even today, we see miracles—lives transformed, relationships restored, and prayers answered. These are signs of God’s kingdom breaking into the world.

4. Faith Over Fear
The mention of handling snakes and drinking poison can be alarming, but it symbolizes God’s protection in the face of danger. This does not mean testing God or seeking out harm, but it reassures us that as we obey Him, He is with us, shielding us from harm.

We live in a world filled with challenges, but we do not face them alone. God’s promise is that His power and presence go with us, giving us courage to fulfill His mission.

5. The Joy of Healing
Placing hands on the sick and seeing them recover is a beautiful expression of God’s compassion. While physical healing is one aspect, many people need emotional and spiritual healing as well. As believers, we are called to be instruments of God’s healing, offering prayer, encouragement, and support to those in need.

The Gospel passage above is both a call and a promise. It reminds us that the gospel is life-changing and that God empowers us to share it with boldness. When we step out in faith, He works through us to bring light into darkness and hope into despair.

As we go about our daily lives, let us remember that we carry the message of salvation and the power of Christ within us. Let us be bold. Let us be faithful. Let us share the good news, trusting that God will confirm His word with His mighty works.
