12/31/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reading: John 1:1-18

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be
4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;
5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 A man named John was sent from God.
7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.
9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.
11 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name,
13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth.
15 John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’”
16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,
17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God. The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

12/31/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 1:1-18

As we approach the end of 2024 and step into 2025, it is natural to reflect on the year gone by—the highs and lows, the victories and challenges, the lessons learned. This transition provides an opportunity not only to look back but to look forward, grounded in the eternal truths of God’s Word. John 1:1-18 offers a powerful message of hope and renewal, perfectly fitting for this season of change.

1. In the Beginning Was the Word
John begins by taking us to the very foundation of existence: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). As we close one chapter and prepare to write another, this truth reminds us that Jesus, the Word made flesh, is the foundation of all things. He existed before time, creating and sustaining everything by His power.

This truth assures us that no matter how uncertain the future may seem, we can trust the One who has been faithful from the beginning. Jesus is the unchanging Word in an ever-changing world. As 2025 dawns, let us anchor ourselves in Him, knowing that His presence and promises endure through every season.

2. The Light Shines in the Darkness
John continues, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). Reflecting on 2024, we may recall moments of darkness—difficulties, loss, or uncertainty. Yet, this verse reminds us that Jesus, the Light of the world, shines through it all, offering hope and clarity.

The darkness of this world cannot overcome the light of Christ. As we face the unknowns of 2025, we can step forward confidently, knowing that His light will guide our path. Whether the year brings challenges or triumphs, His presence will illuminate every moment, giving us courage to walk in faith.

3. Grace Upon Grace
John speaks of the fullness of Jesus, saying, “From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:16). As we look back on 2024, we can surely recount countless instances of God’s grace — blessings we didn’t deserve, strength in times of weakness, and peace that surpassed understanding.

This same abundant grace awaits us in 2025. No matter what lies ahead, we can trust that God’s grace will be sufficient for every need. His unending love and mercy will carry us through, enabling us to face the future with hope and gratitude.

4. The Word Became Flesh
Finally, John declares, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). This truth is a reminder that God is not distant. Through Jesus, He entered into our world, our struggles, and our joys. As we step into the new year, we can carry the assurance that God is with us: Emmanuel.

His presence transforms our perspective. We are not alone in navigating the uncertainties of life. Instead, we are guided by a Savior who knows us intimately and walks with us every step of the way.

Moving Forward into 2025
As 2024 fades into memory, let us embrace 2025 with faith, hope, and a renewed commitment to the Light that never dims. Jesus, the eternal Word, has been faithful in the past and will continue to be faithful in the future. His grace sustains us, His light guides us, and His presence fills us with peace.

May we enter the new year not with fear or hesitation, but with hearts full of gratitude and trust, knowing that the One who was, and is, and is to come holds our lives securely in His hands.
