12/25/2024 (Wednesday – Christmas Day) Today’s Gospel reading: John 1:1-18
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him.
4 Life was in Him, and Life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6 There was a man sent by God, whose name was John.
7 He arrived as a witness to offer testimony about the Light, so that all would believe through him.
8 He was not the Light, but he was to offer testimony about the Light.
9 The true Light, which illuminates every man, was coming into this world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not recognize him.
11 He went to his own, and his own did not accept him.
12 Yet whoever did accept him, those who believed in his name, he gave them the power to become the sons of God.
13 These are born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh, and he lived among us, and we saw his glory, glory like that of an only-begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John offers testimony about him, and he cries out, saying: “This is the one about whom I said: ‘He who is to come after me, has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”
16 And from his fullness, we all have received, even grace for grace.
17 For the law was given though Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one ever saw God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he himself has described him.
12/25/2024 (Wednesday – Christmas Day) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 1:1-18
In the opening verses of John’s Gospel, we encounter a profound and majestic truth: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). These words draw us into the mystery of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word who became flesh and dwelled among us. As we reflect on this passage, we are invited to grasp the significance of God’s love revealed in Christ and how it transforms our lives.
The Eternal Word
John begins by connecting Jesus to the very beginning of creation. The Word, through whom all things were made, is not merely an idea or a message but a person—Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This eternal Word is the source of life, and that life is the light of all humanity (John 1:4).
In a world often filled with darkness — confusion, despair, and sin — this truth brings hope. Jesus is not distant or abstract; He is the living Word who enters into our human experience. His light shines into the darkest corners of our lives, illuminating our hearts and guiding us toward truth and freedom.
The Light That Overcomes Darkness
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). These words remind us of the power of Christ’s light. No matter how overwhelming the challenges of life may seem, His light is victorious.
Today, we face numerous struggles such as personal trials, societal injustices, and global crises. Yet, the light of Christ offers us hope that these difficulties will not have the final word. His light is persistent, unyielding, and redemptive. It penetrates the shadows of fear, doubt, and suffering, offering us a path to peace and renewal.
The Word Became Flesh
The most awe-inspiring truth in this passage is found in John 1:14: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” God did not remain distant or removed from the brokenness of the world. Instead, He chose to enter it, taking on human form to bring salvation to all.
In Christ, we see God’s glory—a glory full of grace and truth. Jesus’ life reveals God’s heart: a heart of compassion, mercy, and love for His creation. This incarnation reminds us that God understands our struggles intimately. He walked where we walk, felt what we feel, and bore our burdens so that we might have life.
Grace Upon Grace
John writes that “from His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:16). This is the abundant gift of Jesus Christ—grace that meets us in our need and overflows in our lives. It is grace that forgives our sins, renews our hearts, and empowers us to live in the light of His truth.
As we continue to reflect on the message of Christmas, let us rejoice in the gift of Jesus, the Word made flesh. His life is the light of humanity, shining in the darkness and bringing grace and truth to all who believe. Let us live in this light, sharing His love with a world longing for hope and redemption.
