9/30/2024 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 9:46-50

46 An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.
47 Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side
48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”
49 Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.”
50 Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

9/30/2024 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 9:46-50

The disciples argue about who among them was the greatest. This moment reflects a common human tendency: the desire to be recognized, esteemed, and to stand above others. In a world that often measures greatness by power, position, and prestige, Jesus offers a radically different perspective.

When Jesus perceived the thoughts of their hearts, He used a child to illustrate true greatness. He took the child and said, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest” (Luke 9:48).

This passage challenges us to rethink what it means to be great in God’s Kingdom. Let’s unpack this transformative lesson:

Greatness in Humility
The world often associates greatness with being in the spotlight, having authority, or achieving success. However, Jesus teaches that true greatness is found in humility. A child, in Jesus’ time, had no status or authority. They were entirely dependent on others and held no power. By using a child as an example, Jesus was showing that greatness isn’t about lifting oneself up but lowering oneself, serving others, and acknowledging our dependence on God. This humility opens the door for God’s grace to work through us, making us truly great in His eyes.

Welcoming with Love
Jesus emphasizes the importance of welcoming others, especially those who are overlooked or considered insignificant. In welcoming a child, who represents the marginalized, the vulnerable, or those who have nothing to offer in return, we welcome Jesus Himself. True greatness is demonstrated in how we treat others, especially those who cannot repay us. It’s about showing love, compassion, and kindness without expecting recognition or reward. This kind of love reflects God’s heart and allows us to be His hands and feet in the world.

Breaking the Barriers of Comparison
The disciples were caught up in comparing themselves to one another, trying to determine who was the greatest. But Jesus teaches that comparison is not the way to greatness. When we compare ourselves to others, we either fall into pride (thinking we are better) or despair (feeling inferior). Instead, Jesus calls us to embrace our unique calling, gifts, and purpose. Our value doesn’t come from how we measure up to others but from our identity in Christ. By focusing on serving God and others, we rise above the need for comparison and step into true greatness.

Unity in Christ
In verses 49-50, the disciples tried to stop someone from casting out demons in Jesus’ name because he wasn’t part of their group. Jesus’ response, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you,” reminds us that God’s work isn’t limited to our understanding, denomination, or group. We should celebrate and encourage anyone advancing God’s Kingdom, even if they aren’t part of our circle. Greatness is found in unity, working together for God’s glory, rather than seeking to elevate ourselves.

True greatness in God’s Kingdom isn’t about being first, having the most, or standing out. It’s about humility, love, service, and unity. It’s about welcoming others, embracing the least, and seeking God’s glory over our own. As we follow Jesus’ example, let’s strive to be great in the way He defines it: by becoming the least, serving others, and lifting up His name above all else. In doing so, we reflect His love and light to a world that desperately needs to see it.
