9/23/2024 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 8:16-18

Jesus said to the crowd:
16 “No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light.
17 For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.
18 Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.”

9/23/2024 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 8:16-18

Jesus shares a parable about light and its purpose: “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.” This parable speaks to the calling of every believer to live in such a way that their life shines with God’s truth and love for the world to see.

The imagery of a lamp is simple yet profound. A lamp’s purpose is to give light, illuminating the darkness. Jesus is saying that those who have received His light, that means, His truth, are not to hide it. The light we receive from Him is meant to be shared, not kept for ourselves. Our faith is not a private matter, nor is it something we should conceal. Rather, we are called to be bold in shining the light of Christ through our words, actions, and how we live our daily lives.

Jesus goes on to say, “For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.” This reminds us that God’s truth is powerful, and it will always come to light. We may sometimes feel hesitant to share our faith or live it boldly, perhaps out of fear of rejection or judgment. But Jesus reassures us that what is hidden will eventually be revealed, and the truth will always come to the surface. Our responsibility is to faithfully shine His light, trusting that God will use it in ways we may not always see.

The final part of the passage is a warning: “Consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.” This challenges us to steward well the light and truth we’ve been given. As we grow in our relationship with God and live out our faith, He will continue to bless and multiply our influence. But if we neglect the light, it fades.

This passage is inspiring because it calls us to live courageously and purposefully as bearers of Christ’s light. In a world often filled with darkness, our lives can be beacons of hope and truth, pointing others to God. Let’s not hide the light but boldly let it shine, knowing that through us, others can find their way to Christ.
