8/24/2024 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: John 1:45-51

45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
46 But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.”
48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

8/24/2024 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 1:45-51

In this Gospel reading, we encounter a remarkable moment in the calling of Jesus’ disciples. Philip, after meeting Jesus, eagerly finds Nathanael and declares, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael’s initial response is skeptical: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” But Philip, undeterred, simply says, “Come and see.”

This exchange between Philip and Nathanael speaks volumes about the journey of faith. Philip’s excitement is contagious, but Nathanael’s doubt reminds us that faith often begins with questions. Nathanael’s skepticism about Nazareth reflects a common human tendency to judge based on preconceived notions. Yet, rather than argue, Philip invites Nathanael to encounter Jesus for himself.

When Nathanael meets Jesus, he is astounded by the Lord’s knowledge of him: “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” This revelation moves Nathanael from doubt to belief, prompting him to declare, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus then responds with a promise that Nathanael will see “greater things” and that he will witness “heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

This passage beautifully illustrates how personal encounters with Jesus can transform doubt into faith. Nathanael’s experience shows us that Jesus knows us intimately, even before we come to Him. He sees our hearts, our struggles, and our doubts. And in those moments when we encounter His love and truth, we are invited to see beyond our skepticism and embrace the reality of who He is — the Son of God, the King of Israel.

Jesus’ promise of “greater things” is a reminder that faith is a journey of ever-deepening discovery. As we walk with Jesus, He reveals more of His glory and the wonders of God’s kingdom. Our initial encounter with Him is just the beginning; there is always more to see, more to experience, and more to understand.

This passage invites us to move from doubt to discovery, from skepticism to faith. Like Nathanael, we may have our questions, but Jesus invites us to “come and see.” As we respond to His invitation, we open ourselves to the transformative power of His presence and the unfolding revelation of His glory in our lives.
