6/21/2024 (Friday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 6:19-23

19 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;
23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”

6/21/2024 (Friday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 6:19-23

In our daily lives, it is easy to become preoccupied with the pursuit of material wealth and earthly possessions. We find ourselves striving for bigger homes, faster cars, and the latest gadgets, believing that these will bring us happiness and fulfillment. However, in the gospel reading above, Jesus offers us a profound lesson on the true nature of treasure and where we should direct our hearts and minds.

Jesus begins by cautioning us against storing up treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Earthly treasures are fleeting and susceptible to decay and loss. The things we accumulate, the wealth we amass, and the possessions we cherish are all vulnerable to the ravages of time and circumstance. They can be taken from us in an instant, leaving us empty and unfulfilled.

Instead, Jesus urges us to store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Heavenly treasures are eternal and indestructible. They represent the values and virtues that align with God’s kingdom—love, kindness, generosity, and faith. These treasures are not subject to the whims of fate or the passage of time. They endure forever, bringing us true and lasting fulfillment.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This profound statement reminds us that our priorities and desires shape the direction of our lives. If our hearts are set on earthly treasures, we will be consumed by the pursuit of material wealth, leading to anxiety, stress, and a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction. But if our hearts are set on heavenly treasures, we will find peace, contentment, and joy in living a life that reflects God’s love and grace.

Jesus also speaks about the eye as the lamp of the body. If our eyes are healthy, our whole body will be full of light. But if our eyes are unhealthy, our whole body will be full of darkness. This metaphor underscores the importance of our perspective. A healthy eye, focused on God’s truth and eternal values, fills our lives with light and clarity. An unhealthy eye, fixated on worldly desires, leads us into darkness and confusion.

Let us, therefore, strive to cultivate a heavenly perspective. Let us focus our hearts and minds on the treasures that truly matter—those that align with God’s will and bring light to our lives. In doing so, we will discover a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment, knowing that we are investing in something eternal and unshakable.

May these words inspire us to seek the true treasures that bring everlasting joy and peace.
