6/13/2024 (Thursday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 5:20-26

20 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.
21 “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
22 But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you,
24 leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.
26 Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

In this gospel passage, Jesus challenges us to embrace a deeper, heart-centered righteousness that surpasses mere legal adherence. He says, “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20). This call to a higher standard isn’t about outward appearances or strict rule-following but about transforming our hearts and relationships.

Jesus highlights the commandment against murder, extending it to include anger and contempt. He teaches that harboring anger against a brother or sister makes us liable to judgment, just as murder does. This emphasizes the importance of inner purity and reconciliation.

Consider this practical example: Imagine a colleague at work who consistently undermines your efforts. It’s easy to let anger fester, creating a toxic work environment. However, Jesus calls us to address this anger directly. Approach the colleague with a spirit of reconciliation, aiming to understand their perspective and seek mutual respect. This act of peacemaking aligns with the deeper righteousness Jesus advocates.

Jesus also stresses the urgency of reconciliation. He says, “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there…First go and be reconciled to them” (Matthew 5:23-24). This underscores that our relationships with others are integral to our relationship with God.

Think about a family member with whom you’ve had a falling out. Instead of letting pride and hurt create a permanent rift, take the initiative to mend the relationship. Reach out with humility, apologize if necessary, and work towards rebuilding trust.

In our daily lives, embracing Jesus’ teachings means striving for genuine, heartfelt righteousness. It’s about choosing forgiveness over anger, seeking reconciliation over division, and fostering peace in our relationships. By doing so, we reflect the true spirit of God’s kingdom and draw closer to His heart.
