2/25/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 9:2-10
2 Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,
3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
4 Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.
5 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
6 He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
7 Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
8 Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.
2/25/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 9:2-10
In the gospel reading above, we find the powerful and inspiring account of the Transfiguration, where Jesus reveals his divine glory to Peter, James, and John on the mountaintop. This passage tells us the profound potential for spiritual growth and revelation of divine mystery.
Just as the disciples witnessed a radiant and awe-inspiring transformation in Jesus, we too can experience moments of profound change and enlightenment. The mountaintop symbolizes the height of our spiritual journey, a place where we can encounter God’s presence and receive divine guidance.
In our daily lives, we may face challenges, doubts, and uncertainties, but the Transfiguration reminds us that there is a higher purpose and a transcendent light that can guide us through the darkest moments. The voice from the cloud that declares, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him,” echoes a call to attentiveness and receptivity to the teachings of love, compassion, and grace.
Let the Transfiguration be a source of inspiration, motivating us to climb the mountains of our own struggles with faith and emerge with a clearer vision of our purpose. Just as Jesus descended from the mountain with renewed strength to face his earthly mission, may we too find strength, courage, and a transformed perspective to navigate the challenges of life. Embrace the journey, for on the mountaintop and in the valleys, God’s transformative power is ever-present, guiding us toward greater love, understanding, and fulfillment.
