2/11/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 1:40-45

40 A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.”
41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
42 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
43 Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once.
44 He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.”
45 The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

Life can feel like leprosy sometimes, isolating us from joy and connection. We carry burdens, visible or unseen, that weigh us down. But just like the leper in the story in the gospel passage above, healing is possible, and it starts with two powerful forces: compassion and faith.

Imagine the leper, desperate and alone, approaching Jesus. Jesus, filled with compassion, didn’t just see the disease, he saw the person yearning for wholeness. He didn’t shy away, but reached out, touched the untouchable, and declared, “I will. Be clean!”

That’s compassion in action. It’s not just feeling sorry, but choosing to see the hurt in others and actively seeking to bring light. Maybe it’s offering a helping hand to someone struggling, a kind word to someone feeling lost, or simply choosing to listen without judgment. Every act of compassion, like Jesus reaching out, becomes a bridge towards healing.

Yet healing also needs faith. The leper had to believe that Jesus could make him clean, even though it seemed impossible. Just like the tiny seed buried deep in the earth has to believe it can break through the darkness and reach for the sun, we too need that inner spark of faith. Faith doesn’t mean having all the answers, but trusting that even in the midst of pain, there’s a light guiding us, a strength waiting to be discovered.

And then, just like the leper who was transformed, we too can blossom. The scars may remain, but they become reminders of our resilience, our capacity to overcome. We emerge stronger, kinder, more connected to ourselves and others.

Let us always remember that healing is a journey, not a destination. There will be days when the darkness feels overwhelming but let us hold onto the memory of Jesus’ touch, the power of compassion, and the quiet strength of faith. Like the leper who stepped out of isolation, we too can walk into the light, carrying the message of hope and transformation wherever we go. We are not alone on this journey. Let us start to believe in the power of Jesus and watch the beautiful transformation unfold in our lives.
