1/9/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 1:21-28
21 Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
22 The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
23 In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
24 he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God!”
25 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!”
26 The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
27 All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
28 His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.
1/9/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s gospel reflection / sermon / homily: Mark 1:21-28
The gospel passage above presents two powerful displays of Jesus’ authority and ministry: His teaching and His healing. Jesus taught with authority because his knowledge and wisdom are divine, unlike the scribes who simply repeated established interpretations. Moreover, His teachings possess transformative power. By emphasizing love, forgiveness, and internal spiritual change, Jesus is able to touch the hearts of His listeners.
On the other hand, the healing ministry of Jesus reveals His commanding power and universal message of hope. He can confront and subdue the power of the devil or unclean spirits which represent spiritual darkness and bondage. In the above reading, the unclean spirits showed obedience to the command of Jesus indicating their inferior power to the divine power of Jesus. Yet, the healing power of Jesus goes beyond the individual. He offers hope to the whole of humanity that liberation is at hand. If only everyone acknowledges the kingship and lordship of Jesus, the world will be freed from dark forces.
The teaching authority and healing power of Jesus are connected. Both respond to human needs. His authoritative teaching wasn’t just words. They are backed by actions such as healing. This means that understanding God’s will and experiencing freedom from suffering go together. God feeds the mind and fills the heart. May we open our minds to His teachings and allow Him to fill our hearts with love and may we do the same to others.
