23 As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
24 Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep.
25 They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.
27 The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”
6/28/2022 Today’s Gospel Reflection: Jesus Calms the Storm
After listening to great teachings and witnessing many miracles, the disciples were excited to follow Jesus. Yet as they were enjoying a boat ride with the Master, a violent storm suddenly came up and they were terrified. We could imagine their initial conversation. Perhaps one of them asked, “Is this what we deserve? After following Jesus, we experience storm?”. Jesus was correct after all. Following Him is not a bed of roses.
The gospel reading above is teaching us to be ready to experience storms in our Christian life. We all encounter difficulties, problems, persecutions and other unhappy situations in our life even after many years of following Jesus. Yet as the same passage tells us, we have Jesus with us. He may be asleep sometimes so that our prayers go unanswered but when we truly call on Him, He “wakes up” and responds positively to our needs. He is in control of our life even when we are in the darkest moments. Let us therefore keep the faith and not terrified.

When fear grips our hearts, it is often because we have lost sight of the One who is with us in the boat. Jesus was not worried; He was at peace, even in the midst of the storm. His presence alone was enough to ensure safety, but the disciples needed to be reminded of this truth.
When Jesus rebukes the wind and waves, bringing immediate calm, it demonstrates His sovereign power over all creation. It reassures us that no matter how fierce the storm, He is greater. He is the Prince of Peace, and with a single command, He can bring tranquility to our chaos.
This story encourages us to anchor our faith in Jesus. It calls us to remember that He is always with us, even when it seems He is silent. Our fears are often rooted in forgetting His presence and power. The next time we face a storm, let us not panic, but instead turn to Jesus with trust, knowing that He has the power to calm any storm and that His peace is available to us.
In the midst of life’s storms, let us hold fast to our faith in Jesus. Let us remember that He is with us, He cares for us, and He has the power to bring peace to our troubled hearts. With faith in Him, we can face any storm with confidence and hope, knowing that He is in control.

There are moments in life when the storm seems louder than God’s voice. The winds howl with anxiety, the waves rise with worry, and our hearts tremble with fear. In the Gospel reading above, we encounter a situation just like this, a storm so fierce that the disciples of Jesus who were seasoned fishermen cried out in desperation, “Lord, save us! We are going to drown!”
Jesus was in the boat but He was asleep.
At first glance, this may seem troubling. How could the Son of God sleep while His friends feared for their lives? But the beauty of this moment lies not in the storm, nor even in the miracle that followed, but in the presence of Jesus. Because He was there, they were never truly in danger.
This story is not just a dramatic episode from the life of Christ but also a vivid picture of our everyday reality. Life brings storms. Illness, financial trouble, broken relationships, self-doubt, anxiety, and unexpected loss all come like waves of the sea, threatening to capsize our fragile sense of peace. Yet the lesson from the Gospel is clear: when Jesus is present, fear has no lasting power.
When the disciples woke Him, Jesus responded with a question that pierces to the heart: “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then He rebuked the wind and the waves, and there was a great calm. In an instant, chaos submitted to Christ.
Why are you afraid? This question is not a rebuke of weakness but a gentle invitation to deeper trust. Jesus was not angry with the disciples. He understood their fear. But He wanted them to understand something far more powerful: that His presence was their peace. The storm was real but so was He.
The truth is, when Jesus is in your boat, no storm can define your story.
Yes, storms will come. Faith does not promise a life without them but it does promise that we will never face them alone. Jesus doesn’t always calm the storm immediately but He always walks through it with us. Sometimes He speaks peace to the storm. Other times, He speaks peace to us in the midst of it.
In your own life, you might be facing waves that feel overwhelming. You may feel like God is silent, asleep even. But don’t mistake His stillness for absence. He is in the boat with you. He sees the storm. He feels your fear. And in His perfect time, He will speak peace.
So do not be afraid. When Jesus is near, fear must flee. The One who commands the winds and waves also commands your heart to be still and know that He is God.
Remember this: your storm is not stronger than your Savior. His presence is not a promise that you won’t face trouble, but it is the assurance that trouble won’t have the final word. He is with you. He is not distant nor disinterested but deeply present. And His presence changes everything especially your perspective.
Anchor your life on this Gospel episode. Let it remind you that even when the waters rise, you are not alone. You are not forgotten. So breathe deep and take heart. Trust the One who sleeps through storms, not because He doesn’t care but because He knows they cannot win.
Jesus is in the boat. You don’t have to be afraid. Just pray and He will calm your storm and give you peace.
