A reading from the gospel according to John 16:12-15:
Jesus said to his disciples:
12 “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
13 But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears and will declare to you the things that are coming.
14 He will glorify me because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
15 Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason, I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”
5/25/2022 Gospel Reflection: Spirit of Truth
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. Take note of the biblical use of the personal pronoun “He”. The use of fire or wind as a symbol of the Holy Spirit does not in any way make the Holy Spirit an inanimate object. The Holy Spirit is God and He is alive! He is our Advocate, our Helper, and our Comforter.
God is more than the universe. Our little mind, no matter how intelligent we are, is but one tiny dot of the universe. Even with the advent of modern technology, there are so many things that we do not know yet. The more information we get, the more questions crop up and we are as confused as before.
Just like the apostles. For three years, Jesus taught them a lot of things. In one dinner setting, during the night before His arrest, He gave them a mouthful of teachings which is now found in three chapters of the gospel of John (Chapters 14-16). Jesus wanted to tell them more but they cannot bear all (verse 12 in the above reading). And so He promised them the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, who will guide them to all truth.
We do not seek to know the whole mystery of God and the whole universe. In our own life, we already have many unanswered questions. Yet if we humbly accept our limitation and come to Jesus to ask for the Spirit of truth, He will reveal to us what we need to know. We just have to trust in Him and be satisfied that His love for us is more than enough reason to be happy now and forever. After all, the glory of God is man fully satisfied and happy.

In the gospel reading above, Jesus speaks to his disciples, promising them the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who will lead them into all truth. This passage embodies a profound message of hope, empowerment, and divine guidance that resonates through the ages.
As we journey through life, we often face uncertainty, challenges, and moments of doubt. Yet, in the midst of these trials, we can find solace in knowing that we are not alone. Just as Jesus assured his disciples, we too have the promise of the Holy Spirit, guiding us along our paths.
The Holy Spirit serves as our compass, illuminating the truth and providing us with wisdom beyond our own understanding. It whispers to us in moments of confusion, gently nudging us towards the right decisions. In times of darkness, it shines as a beacon of light, illuminating the way forward.
But the message of John 16:12-15 goes beyond mere guidance; it speaks to the limitless potential that lies within each of us. With the Holy Spirit as our guide, there are no limits to what we can achieve. We are empowered to overcome obstacles, to reach new heights, and to fulfill our God-given purpose.
Yet, this promise comes with a call to action. We are called to open our hearts and minds to the leading of the Holy Spirit, to listen attentively to its whispers, and to follow where it may lead. It requires faith, courage, and a willingness to surrender to a higher power.
So, let us take heart in the words of Jesus and embrace the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let us step forward with confidence, knowing that we are divinely guided and empowered to fulfill our destinies. And let us remember that with faith as our compass, there is nothing that we cannot overcome.

Today we contemplate how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are united in love. They form a community with equality yet with different roles. God the Father created the universe and everything in it. God the Son was sent to incarnate and become our redeemer while God the Holy Spirit is our guide to all truth. Together they form the Blessed Trinity.
The love of the Blessed Trinity overflows into world. During our baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth and we become incorporated into this community of love. Thus, the whole of Christendom ought to reflect this community of love and be united in truth.
As a member of this community of love, we do everything in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This is the way we glorify God to whom we belong by virtue of our baptism. Because God is love then love is our badge and truth is our guide.

Jesus reminds His disciples that revelation comes in seasons and truth is unveiled with divine timing and compassion.
Jesus says, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” This single line is packed with mercy. It tells us that God does not overload us with more than we can handle. Our Savior speaks with the care of a Shepherd, knowing not just what we need to hear, but when we’re ready to hear it. God’s silence is not His absence. His restraint is often His protection.
Then comes the promise: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” What a hope this is! We are not left to navigate life alone. The Holy Spirit, God’s very presence within us, walks with us daily, revealing truth as we grow, guiding us through each decision, each trial, each question. The Spirit doesn’t speak independently but delivers the words and wisdom of God Himself. He speaks only what He hears from the Father and the Son, forming a perfect channel of divine communication and love.
This passage assures us that truth isn’t just a set of facts. It is a Person, a relationship, and a revelation. And it unfolds as we abide in Christ. The Holy Spirit doesn’t rush us. He guides us. He doesn’t condemn us for what we don’t yet understand. He patiently reveals the heart of God, one layer at a time.
Jesus goes on to say, “He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” In other words, the Spirit’s work is to magnify Jesus in our hearts. He leads us deeper into Christ, not merely into knowledge, but into transformation. He takes what belongs to Jesus namely peace, love, power, and truth and makes it known to us.
So what does this mean for us today? It means we don’t have to have everything figured out to move forward. We don’t need to be overwhelmed by what’s still unknown. God is not withholding truth from you. He’s unfolding it at the pace of grace.
It means we can trust the Holy Spirit to teach us, to lead us, to open our eyes to deeper realities. He knows where we are, and He knows where we are going. Our journeys isn’t aimless. It is guided by the Spirit of truth who declares what is to come.
It means we must listen. Quiet our hearts. Trust the process. Seek not just answers, but intimacy with the One who gives them. The Holy Spirit isn’t an abstract force; He is our Comforter, Counselor, and Companion.
And finally, it means our lives should glorify Jesus, just as the Spirit glorifies Him. As we grow in truth, we shine His light to others. As we are filled, we are sent. The Spirit of truth leads us not only to deeper faith but to faithful action.
So take heart. We are not alone. The Spirit is guiding us. And what we don’t yet understand, He will reveal in time. Let us trust the pace of God and follow the voice of truth. And let our lives be a reflection of the glory of Christ.
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, may I give glory to your name in everything that I do. I pray that the Holy Spirit may satisfy my thirst for wisdom and knowledge. Amen.
