September 15 2021 Gospel Reading and Reflection: Luke 2:33-35

A reading from the gospel according to Luke 2:33-35

33 Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted
35 and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Reflection: Mother

Good News: This Child is destined for the fall and rise of many.

Like every one of us, Jesus too has a mother. Her name is Mary. She took good care of Him until the very day He died and buried. She was there for Him from womb to tomb, so to speak. How blessed we are to have a mother like her! Indeed, we blessed because Jesus Himself gave her to us as our mother while He was dying on the cross. (John 19:25-27)

Our gospel reading reminds us of our own mother who sacrificed a lot for us. Let us imagined how many sleepless nights did our mother spent to care for us when we were babies. Let us be reminded how she taught us how to walk and talk. Do we ever have any idea how much sacrifice she has given for own good? We owe a lot to other mother so we praise and thank the Lord for her.

Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is a woman no different from other mothers except that she suffered next to the greatest suffering ever known to mankind. From the unusual birth of Jesus in a manger to the flight to Egypt, from the taunting of people who called His Son crazy to the inhuman torture and crucifixion, Mary kept her cool and suffered in silence. Jesus suffered for us and His mother suffered with Him. No wonder, her cousin Elizabeth called her blessed among all women.

Mary’s Son is no doubt a contradiction. He has come to bring joy and peace to a world wrecked by sin and suffering. Yet, at the same time, He came to bring light to a world living in darkness. Darkness is opposed to the Light. The contradiction is obvious. Those who continue to live in darkness will fall. On the other hand, those who accept the light will rise. There is a decision for each one of us to make. The choice is ours.
