The Story of Computer Scientist and Entrepreneur James H. Clark

On March 23 in the year 1944, one of the most famous computer scientist-turned-entrepreneurs was born in Texas, United States of America. His name is James Henry Clark, the founder of Silicon Graphics, Inc., Netscape Communications Corporation, myCFO, Healtheon, and CommandScape. According to forbes.com, his net worth is $4 billion as of August 2021.

James H. Clark has a troubled childhood. After being suspended in high school, he dropped out and joined the US Navy for four years. He attended night classes at Tulane University and later, he was allowed to enroll at the University of New Orleans where he eventually finished a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Physics. He went on to obtain a PhD in computer science at the University of Utah. After graduation, he joined the computer graphics laboratory of New York Institute of Technology and afterwards, he became an assistant professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz. From 1979 to 1982, he was an associate professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University.

In 1982, James Clark founded Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI), a company focused on 3D imaging hardware and software which were based on his prior research while he was at Stanford. Although it was successful for producing movie visual effects, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009 and all its assets were sold to Rackable Systems.

James co-founded Netscape with Marc Andreessen in 1994. The company pioneered the development of software for browsing the World Wide Web called Mosaic. When the Netscape went public in 1996, James investment of $5 million swelled to $2 billion. He went on to fund other startups such as medical care Helatheon, personal financial manager myCFO, network-security Neoteris, and most recently building control CommandScape.

James Clark has been married four times and has four children.
