On this day, November 18 in the year 1944, one of the most respected fashion designers was born in Potsdam, Germany. His name is Wolfgang Joop, the founder of fashion label and fragrance company Joop! and high-end fashion Wurderkind.
Wolfgang Joop was the son of an editor and author. He acquired a degree in advertising psychology from the Braunschweig University of Technology. In 1970, he and his former wife Karin entered a design contest and won first prize in three categories. He then went to work as illustrator and freelance designer for several fashion houses in Italy, France and the United Kingdom. He also became a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin.
In 1978, Wolfgang Joop launched his first fur collection under his own label. Three years later, he founded his own company Joop! with the launching of ready-to-wear women’s line. Later, he added menswear and fragrances with the opening of his boutiques in Hamburg and Munich. Joop! jeans were added in 1988. In 1994, he entered the United States market.
In 1998, Wolfgang Joop sold his shares in Joop!. After five years, he made a comeback in the fashion scene by establishing Wunderkind, a high-end couture fashion label.
Wolfgang Joop has two daughters with former wife Karin. He is now married to Edwin Lemberg. Outside of fashion, he is the author of several books on fashion, art, cooking, and his own autobiography. He also writes articles for several publications. He has been invited as a judge in some shows such as Germany’s Next Topmodel (2006), Fast Forward (1998) and Die Harald Schmidt Show (1995).
