The Success Story of Wang Jianlin and his Dalian Wanda Group

On October 24 in the year 1954, one of the richest men in China was born in Dalian City in the province of Sichuan. His name is Wang Jianlin, the founding Chairman of Dalian Wanda Group.

Wang Jianlin was the son of a communist military man who fought alongside Mao Zedong. Educated at the Liaoning University, he served in the People’s Liberation Army for 16 years, rising from border guard to regiment commander. In 1986, he was appointed Director of the Xigang District Government in Dalian.

In 1992, Wang Jianlin was promoted as general manager of a small home developer in Dalian. He changed the name to Dalian Wanda. In the following years, he expanded the business to encompass not only residential building but also shopping plazas, luxury hotels, cinemas, department stores, karaoke centers, theme parks and a very large studio for shooting films. During the launch of the $8 billion mini-Hollywood in Qingdao in 2014, he flew in celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Beckinsale, and John Travolta to witness the opening ceremonies.

In 2012, Dalian Wanda Group became the largest cinema owner when it acquired the AMC Theatres in the United States. In 2014, it raised $3.7 billion in an initial public offering. Wang has since invested in sports teams in Europe. He is also the owner of Sunseeker, a manufacture of yachts in Great Britain.

Wang Jianlin has a son with his wife Lin Ning. He has held important positions in the Chinese Communist Government and has received several awards for his entrepreneurial and civic activities. As of October, 2020, forbes.com estimated his net worth at 13.6 billion US dollars and ranked him at 76 among the world’s billionaires.
