Cher Wang was the daughter of the powerful founder of Formosa Plastics Group. She earned a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. Since 1980, she worked with First International Computer Inc. rising to the position of general manager. In 1987, she founded VIA Technologies, a fabless semiconductor company. In 1997, she co-founded High-Tech Computer (HTC) Corporation which is now one of the leading original design manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers of consumer electronics such as smartphones and tablets as well as virtual reality hardware. She remains chairwoman of both companies while at the same time holding the position of CEO of HTC.

VIA Technologies is now part of the Formosa Plastics group. On the other hand, HTC Corporation is a publicly traded company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Although HTC has seen falling share in the smartphone business, it is banking on virtual reality hardware to turn its fortune around. In 2016, the company launched the VR headset Vive.

Cher Wang is married with 2 children. Together with her husband, she had a net worth of $8.8 billion in 2011 but has since gone down when the shares of HTC bottomed out in 1916. Still, the family remained one of the richest in Taiwan. Cher was named an Industry Partner in World Economic Forum. She is also a member of the APEC Business Advisory Council.
