Charles is the son of a wealthy Jewish couple from Iraq. In 1947, the family moved to England where his father purchased two textile mills and an 8-bedroom house. Charles has three other brothers. Charles started his career in advertising when he worked as a copy writer at Benton & Bowles agency in London. Later, he resigned to put up a consulting agency. In 2010, he donated the gallery to the British public. It is now one of the most visited museums in the world.
