Charles Saatchi and the Rise of an Advertising Giant

On this day, June 9 in the year 1943, the co-founder of Saatchi and Saatchi advertising giant was born in Baghdad, Iraq. His name is Charles Saatchi. According to celebritynetworth.com, he has a net worth estimated at $200 million.

Charles is the son of a wealthy Jewish couple from Iraq. In 1947, the family moved to England where his father purchased two textile mills and an 8-bedroom house. Charles has three other brothers. At an early age, he was infatuated with western culture especially American music and the arts. He attended the London College of Communication.

Charles started his career in advertising when he worked as a copy writer at Benton & Bowles agency in London. Later, he resigned to put up a consulting agency. In 1970, he partnered with his brother Maurice to form Saatchi and Saatchi. Their remarkable efficiency and creativity attracted a lot of clients including Margaret Thatcher. Following the acquisition of advertising firm Ted Bates in 1986, Saatchi and Saatchi became the largest advertising agency in the world. In the 1990’s, the brothers resigned from the company they founded after a failed bid for the Midland Bank. In 1995, they founded M & C Saatchi agency.

Charles Saatchi is also a notable art collector.In 1985, he opened the Saatchi Gallery to showcase his numerous collection of contemporary art. The gallery contains some of the works of Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Anselm Kiefer, Andy Warhols and Julian Schnabel. The gallery also exhibits the arts of Damian Hirst and Marc Quinn. In 2010, he donated the gallery to the British public. It is now one of the most visited museums in the world.

As an author, Charles published 9 books which are mostly self-help. Though married three times, he has only one child named Phoebe with his second wife Kay Hartenstein.
