History of Bataraza
On January 1, 1964, Bataraza was created by virtue of Republic Act 3425. It was formerly a territory of Brooke’s Point municipality. The town was named after Datu Bataraza Narrazid, the first mayor.
On June 30, 2022, House Bill No. 334 was filed by Rep. Michael L. Romero which seeks to convert Bataraza into a component city. Previously, House Bill No. 6278 was filed on February 12, 2020 for the same purpose but it was not acted upon during the 18th Congress.
Economy of Bataraza
Bataraza is mainly an agricultural and mining town. Rice, coconut, fish and nickel are the main products. The provincial government has a project to make the town the southern center for agricultural production and processing with the establishment of a food terminal at barangay Bonobono.
Bataraza-based Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation operates one of the largest nickel mines in the country.
