19 The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
20 He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.”
21 He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

Theme: Listening with the Heart
Jesus is surrounded by people when His mother and relatives come looking for Him. Someone tells Him that they are outside, but Jesus uses the moment to teach something deeper: belonging to Him is not simply a matter of family connection, familiarity, or being physically close. True belonging is revealed through those who listen to God and put His teaching into practice.
This message challenges us today. We may hear many voices every day such as voices of family, friends, society, social media, fear, ambition, and even our own doubts. But among all these voices, there is one voice we should never allow ourselves to ignore: the voice of God.
Let us remember the word HEAR.
H – Hold on to God’s voice.
Life can become noisy. Problems can be louder than prayers, fear can be louder than faith, and disappointment can make us question whether God is still with us. Yet God continues to speak through Scripture, prayer, people, circumstances, and the quiet moments of our hearts. We need to slow down enough to recognize His voice. When everything around us says, “Give up,” God may be gently telling us, “Keep going.”
E – Examine what you hear.
Not every voice deserves our obedience. Some voices encourage us; others discourage us. Some lead us toward love, forgiveness, humility, and hope; others push us toward anger, pride, revenge, and despair. Listening to God requires discernment. Before following a voice, ask: Will this bring me closer to God? Will it make me a better person? Will it lead me toward what is good and right?
A – Act on what you hear.
Hearing God’s message is only the beginning. Faith becomes meaningful when it becomes action. It is easy to say that we believe in kindness, but kindness must be shown. It is easy to speak about forgiveness, but forgiveness must be practiced. It is easy to pray for the suffering, but sometimes God expects us to become part of the answer.
What we truly hear is revealed by what we do.
R – Remain faithful.
There will be days when following God’s way is difficult. We may not understand why certain things happen. We may pray without immediately receiving the answer we want. We may feel forgotten, rejected, or alone. But faithfulness means continuing to trust even when we cannot see the whole picture.
The people closest to Jesus were not simply those who stood near Him. They were those who listened to God’s will and allowed that listening to transform their lives.
Today, ask yourself: What voice am I listening to most?
If fear is louder than faith, listen again. If anger is louder than love, listen again. If discouragement is louder than hope, listen again.
God is still speaking.
May we not only hear His voice with our ears, but recognize it with our hearts, receive it with our minds, and live it through our actions.
HEAR God. Trust God. Follow God. And let your life become the answer to what you have heard.
