The Gospel narrative teaches us that following Jesus is not always a journey toward comfort, popularity, or worldly success. It is a journey of surrender, sacrifice, and faithful love. Jesus showed His disciples that His mission would involve suffering and death before victory could come. Peter resisted this difficult truth because he wanted a safer path. Like Peter, we sometimes want God’s blessings without life’s burdens, a crown without a cross, and victory without sacrifice. Yet Jesus teaches us that the greatest profit is not found in gaining more but in becoming more like Him.
Let the word PROFIT guide our reflection.
P — Pursue God’s purpose
Life becomes meaningful when we pursue God’s purpose rather than merely following our personal desires. Our plans may focus on comfort, recognition, wealth, or security, but God looks at the greater mission of our lives. Difficulties do not always mean we are on the wrong road. Sometimes, they are part of the road that forms our character, strengthens our faith, and prepares us to serve others.
R — Reject the easy but empty path
Peter wanted Jesus to avoid suffering, but the easier path was not the faithful path. We also face temptations to compromise our values, escape responsibility, or choose what is convenient instead of what is right. A comfortable decision can sometimes leave the soul empty. We must learn to reject anything that pulls us away from truth, even when it promises immediate pleasure or relief.
O — Offer your whole life to God
Jesus calls us to surrender ourselves. This does not mean losing our identity or believing that we are worthless. It means placing our gifts, dreams, time, and decisions in God’s hands. Surrender is not defeat; it is trusting that God can do more with our lives than we can accomplish alone. What we offer in faith can become a blessing far greater than we imagined.
F — Follow even when it is difficult
Following Jesus requires more than admiration. It means walking in His way when love demands patience, forgiveness, courage, and sacrifice. The cross we carry may be a family responsibility, an illness, a personal struggle, or the daily challenge of remaining honest in a dishonest world. We do not carry these burdens alone. Christ walks before us and gives us strength.
I — Invest in what lasts forever
The world teaches us to measure profit through possessions, achievements, influence, and applause. These things may have value, but they cannot satisfy the deepest needs of the soul. We must invest in faith, relationships, compassion, integrity, and service. Money can be lost, beauty can fade, and popularity can disappear, but the good we do in love continues to bear fruit.
T — Treasure your soul
A person may appear successful before the world and still feel empty inside. Nothing we gain is worth the destruction of our peace, character, faith, or relationship with God. Our soul is precious and cannot be replaced by wealth or recognition. We should therefore examine what our ambitions are costing us.
True PROFIT is not having everything while losing ourselves. It is pursuing God’s purpose, rejecting empty paths, offering our lives, following faithfully, investing in what lasts, and treasuring our souls. When we choose Christ above everything else, even our sacrifices become seeds of renewal. We may lose temporary comforts, but we gain a life filled with meaning, peace, and eternal hope.
