Biography
Kara David began career at GMA Network in 1995 as a production assistant and researcher. She was later promoted as writer/researcher for the program “Emergency” and as host “Huling Hirit”. She went on to become host / anchor of other programs including Case Unclosed, News To Go, Pinas Sarap, and i-Witness.
David’s success story is rooted in her ability to connect with and tell the stories of ordinary people, often those in difficult social circumstances. Her documentaries, particularly for the program I-Witness, have garnered numerous awards and made a tangible impact. She has won over 22 international and more than 50 local awards.
One of her most significant achievements is winning a George Foster Peabody Award for her documentary “Ambulansyang de Paa” (Ambulance on Foot), which highlighted the lack of access to health services for the Mangyan tribe. This award made her the second Filipino to receive this prestigious recognition. Another notable documentary, “Selda Inosente” (Innocent Cell), about children born and raised in prison, won the UNICEF Child Rights Award.
Beyond her journalistic work, David has channeled her commitment to social change into action. In 2002, she founded Project Malasakit, a non-profit foundation that provides support to the people featured in her documentaries. The foundation has helped over 800 families by providing access to schooling, food, and medicine for underprivileged children. She is also the head of the journalism department at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
