September 13 2025 Gospel Reading and Reflection

9/13/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 6:43-49

Jesus said to his disciples:
43 “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
45 A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?
47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them.
48 That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house
but could not shake it because it had been well built.
49 But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.”

9/13/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / sermon / homily: Luke 6:43-49

It is often easier to be impressed by appearances than to examine the roots of a person’s character. Jesus reminds us in this passage that a good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree cannot hide what it truly is. Our words, actions, and attitudes flow from the condition of our hearts. No matter how polished someone may look on the outside, the truth of who they are is revealed in the fruits they bear. This challenges us to look beyond surface success or outward religiosity and instead focus on cultivating goodness deep within, so that what naturally flows out of us brings life to others.

Jesus goes on to compare two builders, one who built his house on a solid foundation of rock, and another who built on sand. When storms came, the house on the rock stood firm while the one without foundation collapsed. This simple but powerful image speaks to the realities of our daily struggles. Life is filled with storms including financial difficulties, broken relationships, sickness, disappointments, or unexpected challenges. If our lives are built merely on shifting sands like popularity, wealth, or shallow faith, we are easily shaken. But when we anchor ourselves in God’s word and put it into practice, we are like the wise builder whose house stands strong even when the winds rage.

The passage invites us to take an honest look at our own lives. What kind of fruit are we producing? Do our words encourage and heal, or do they tear down? Is our foundation strong enough to withstand the trials we will inevitably face? Building on rock requires effort, consistency, and trust. It means listening to Jesus not just with our ears but with our lives—living with integrity, showing kindness, forgiving freely, and walking in humility. The storms may still come, but we will not be destroyed because our strength rests not in ourselves but in God.

Today, let us choose to be people who bear good fruit, people whose words and deeds reflect a heart transformed by love. Let us also commit to building on the solid foundation of God’s truth, one decision at a time. With roots that go deep and a foundation that is firm, we can face life’s challenges with courage and inspire others to do the same.
