2/28/2025 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reading: Mark 10:1-12

1 Jesus came into the district of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them.
2 The Pharisees approached him and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him.
3 He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?”
4 They replied, “Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.”
5 But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment.
6 But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
7 For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
8 and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh.
9 Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
10 In the house, the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.
11 He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her;
12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

2/28/2025 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 10:1-12

This Gospel passage teaches us that marriage is not merely a human contract but a divine covenant. In today’s world, where relationships are often treated as disposable, Jesus reminds us of the sacred nature of marriage. It is not just about love and companionship but also about commitment, sacrifice, and faithfulness.

Marriage as God’s Design
God created marriage as a reflection of His love for His people. Just as He remains faithful to us despite our weaknesses, husbands and wives are called to remain committed to each other. In a world that encourages self-interest and instant gratification, true love requires patience, humility, and perseverance.

Jesus acknowledges that Moses allowed divorce because of people’s hardness of heart, but this was not God’s original plan. This reminds us that human weakness can lead to broken relationships, but God desires restoration and healing. Instead of looking for an easy way out, He calls us to nurture and protect our marriages.

Commitment Over Convenience
Many marriages struggle because people focus on personal happiness rather than shared purpose. However, marriage is not just about what we can get from it but what we can give. It requires selflessness, just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for it (Ephesians 5:25).

When challenges arise, instead of thinking about separation, we must seek God’s wisdom and grace. Difficulties should drive couples closer to God, not further apart. Praying together, communicating with honesty, and choosing forgiveness are key to a strong marriage.

God’s Grace in Brokenness
While Jesus upholds the sanctity of marriage, He does not condemn those who have experienced broken relationships. His grace is sufficient for those who have suffered the pain of divorce or separation. He offers healing, restoration, and a new beginning to anyone who seeks Him with a repentant heart.

If you are married, treasure your spouse and commit to honoring God in your relationship. If you have experienced brokenness, know that God’s love for you has not changed. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

May we all strive to love with the same faithful and unconditional love that Christ shows us, remembering that true commitment is not about perfection but perseverance. Let us build our relationships on the firm foundation of God’s Word, trusting that He will sustain us through every season of life.

“Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” – Mark 10:9
