9/25/2024 (Wednesday) Today’s Gospel Reading: Luke 9:1-6

1 Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
2 and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
3 He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.
4 Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
5 And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.”
6 Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and curing diseases everywhere.

9/25/2024 (Wednesday) Today’s Gospel Reflection / Homily / Sermon: Luke 9:1-6

In Gospel passage above, we find Jesus sending out His twelve disciples on a mission, equipping them with both authority and power. He commands them to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick. What stands out is that Jesus sends them with minimal provisions: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt” (v. 3). They are to rely entirely on God’s provision and the hospitality of others as they journey through different towns.

This reading teaches us profound lessons about faith, dependence, and simplicity in service. The disciples are not just given a mission; they are given authority and power, and this is crucial. Often, we feel inadequate or underqualified to fulfill what God calls us to do. However, Jesus empowers those He sends. It’s not about what we bring to the table, but about trusting in the power that God provides.

Moreover, Jesus asks His disciples to go without the typical comforts and securities of life. No extra clothes, no food, no money. This lack of material provision is a call to trust in God’s sufficiency. When we embark on our own spiritual journeys, we are often tempted to accumulate and rely on worldly resources for success. But Jesus is showing us that spiritual work thrives not through earthly wealth but through dependence on God.

In our modern world, where self-sufficiency is prized, this call to trust God for provision is counter-cultural. But by doing so, we open ourselves to seeing God work in miraculous ways. Just as the disciples lacked nothing despite their outward limitations, God promises to supply our needs as we step out in faith.

Finally, the message of simplicity. Jesus’ instructions highlight that the core of the disciples’ mission was not complicated; it was to preach and to heal. Likewise, the gospel we share is simple: it’s about spreading God’s love and mercy. We don’t need to overcomplicate our witness.

In stepping out with faith, reliance on God, and simplicity, we become vessels for God’s power, just like the twelve. Trust Him, for He equips those He sends.
